Three Festivals, One Weekend

Plus jazz, blues, and the Boss

Storms With a Punch. Did many of you get hail last weekend? Central Texas sits in “Hail Alley,” which is a polite way of saying storms here don’t just rain - they throw things. Warm Gulf air, cooler dry air, and the Hill Country’s elevation all work together to push storms upward, creating near-perfect conditions for hail. Add in spring’s mix of hot days and freezing air above, and things can turn quickly.

Texas leads the country in hail damage most years, and it’s rarely the giant ones - most car damage happens from hail under 2 inches. Which is how a normal rain forecast around Lake Travis somehow turns into “maybe move your car” energy more often than not.

The sky has calmed down and the sun is finally coming out again. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Lake Days, Upgraded. Austin Surf Lodge will soon be giving you a well-designed excuse to trade screen time for lake time. Opening this summer on Lake Travis, this escape offers wakesurf and pontoon charters alongside cabins that sleep anywhere from couples to full groups.

Wellness, with a Star. Canyon Ranch in Spicewood is bringing in chef Val Cantu of Michelin-starred Californios to lead its new concept, Estella - proof that “healthy” no longer has to mean underwhelming.

Adopt Me. Meet Rhett, a 4 lb, 6-month-old Pomapoo with a silver coat, a bounce that earned him the nickname Roo, and a comeback story that deserves a much softer landing.

Then vs Now. One of us remembers a time when Hamilton Pool felt like you had discovered something you weren’t supposed to find. Cold water, a steady waterfall spilling over the limestone, sunlight hitting just right, and somehow, not that many people around. The kind of place you’d bring friends visiting from out of town and feel like you were letting them in on a secret.

These days, it’s a different story. Between prolonged drought, tighter preservation rules, and a surge in popularity, the pool you remember isn’t always the one you get. The waterfall slows to a trickle, swimming is often restricted, and reservations are required just to access it.

It’s not ruined, just changed. A reminder that some of the best parts of Austin aren’t guaranteed forever.
