Smoke On the Water. One of us was a student at UT when The Oasis caught fire in 2005. Back then, it was a lone cliffside restaurant with a gravel parking lot that kicked up dust as you pulled in. You’d nurse a margarita at a wobbly patio table and watch the sun slip behind the hills. Simple, yet full of charm.
When the fire happened that summer, it felt like more than a building had burned. Of course, The Oasis returned bigger and flashier, rebuilt into a sprawling sunset empire of decks and shops. But for those of us who remember the gravel-lot days, the sunsets back then felt different - more intimate, less ostentatious, and a little closer to the Austin we knew.
The sunsets are still here, and so are the reasons to get out this week.

If you could add more of something to the Lake Travis area, what would it be? |
Brake Lights. Last week we asked what changes you’ve noticed most around Lake Travis. Over 60% of you said the same thing - longer drives and heavier traffic. Our area keeps growing - more neighbors, more houses, more shops - but the roads? Still built for a much smaller crowd.
Austin’s True Logo. We also asked what you thought about Austin’s new million dollar logo? One reader joked the design is missing its most authentic feature - a big red traffic line, the universal symbol of life on MoPac, I-35, and SH71. Seems to be a theme here!
