Something's Boiling

Plus George Strait, kites, books and bees

Today’s current water level: 73.3%

Boil Season. We were just in Louisiana, where both of us grew up, and the crawfish set the bar exactly where you’d expect. Perfect spice, no shortcuts, and the kind of boil that turns into an all-day event whether you planned for it or not.

Back in Texas, it’s officially that time of year. Crawfish boils are popping up across the area, bringing a little bit of that same energy with them - long tables, messy hands, cold drinks, and just enough debate over who’s doing it right.

It may not be Louisiana, but for a few weekends each spring, it gets pretty close.

Here’s where to find them this week.

Last Week's Poll Results. We asked about your favorite Asian restaurant around the lake, and Sakura came out on top - readers praised the variety, the value, and the kind of service that actually makes you feel like a regular.

But the real win was the hidden gems that surfaced. One reader flagged UTea Kitchen in Lakeway — a Vietnamese spot a couple doors down from Bluefin that apparently doesn't advertise anywhere and isn't on any delivery apps. Easy to miss, worth finding.

"UTea Kitchen (Vietnamese) and Shan (Szechuan) definitely deserve a mention — authentic Szechuan food my husband hadn't found outside of China, and a Lakeway Vietnamese spot most people don't even know exists yet."

Which brings us to a different kind of local status symbol…

A Quick Reset. Canyon Grille reopens April 14 after a one-week pause and a quiet pivot under new ownership. Leaning into a farm-to-table concept with a rotating seasonal menu, local sourcing, and fresh Gulf seafood - it’s the same place, just a little more intentional.

Last Call, New Tenant. Deep Eddy Vodka is closing its 30,000-sq-ft Dripping Springs tasting room on June 13, with Goodnight Loving Vodka taking over next. Deep Eddy, meanwhile, is heading closer to Austin for less acreage and more access.

Adopt Me. Meet Koa, a curious, charming two-month-old rescue puppy named after the Hawaiian koa tree, currently splitting his time between wrestling matches, toy discoveries, and very serious cuddle sessions.

Mood Lighting. Sun breaking through just enough to light up the water, clouds hanging low like they’re deciding whether to stay or move on, and the lake winding its way through it all like it knows it’s the main character. Not a bad reminder that even on an in-between kind of day, this place still delivers.
