Goodbye, Cabin Fever

Plus the King of Country returns

Today’s current water level: 78.5%

Winter Came Through. On Monday, it was officially colder here than in Juneau, Alaska - a sentence none of us expected to say out loud. While the Texas grid held and outages were thankfully limited, the winter storm brought a familiar feeling: a little cabin fever, a little déjà vu, and a whole lot of reshuffling. Multiple days of icy roads, school closures, and existential cabin fever made the week feel oddly like a mash-up of Groundhog Day and early-Covid vibes.

Road conditions were dicey in spots, travel plans got cautious, and the lake stayed quiet - but we’re grateful for the midweek thaw that finally gave us a glimpse of normal again.

With warmer temps creeping back in, here’s what’s happening around the lake this week.

Last Week’s Poll Results. We asked about your confidence in the forecast, and you called it. Most of you were cautiously optimistic, and the forecast earned your trust - cold, messy in spots, but nothing that completely derailed the week. Power stayed on, roads thawed, and we all moved on.

If we helped organize a local event, what would you actually show up to?

A Different Kind of View. A Lakeway home with a backyard neighbor you don’t see every day - the Lakeway Private Air Park.

It’s a normal, well-kept Lakeway home, except with planes occasionally rolling by instead of golfers or deer. For the right buyer, that’s either a dealbreaker or the whole point.

Listed at $659K, this one isn’t chasing hype - it’s offering a genuinely rare setup you don’t come across often around Lake Travis.

Smoke and Ice. A Bee Cave apartment fire on Monday damaged 20 units and displaced 45 residents, but everyone made it out safely while crews battled flames and icy conditions.

Don’t Houston the Hill Country. As one local takeaway sums it up. New drone shots of the Square at Lakeway development are raising eyebrows over the scale of clearcutting and disappearing green space.

Hold the Whiskey. Treaty Oak Distilling is temporarily closing its ranch doors for behind-the-scenes upgrades. No reopening date yet, but they say the next chapter is worth the wait.

Cool Beans. Jasper Coffee is pouring craft-roasted, single-origin coffee with house-made syrups inside A Health & Wellness Shop in Steiner Ranch - run by a husband-and-wife duo with big local support.

Adopt Me. Meet Chestnut, a bright, bouncy 2-month-old pup who believes toys, treats, and cuddles are all equally life-changing - social, confident, and pure joy wrapped in a very adoptable package.

Smoke on the Water. When frigid air settles over comparatively warm Lake Travis, the lake releases its heat upward, cooling rapidly at the surface and condensing into a smoke-like fog - a brief winter effect known as steam fog that makes the water look like it’s quietly breathing. Check out the phenomenon beautifully captured by a local neighbor.
