Blast From The Past
Plus Crawfish, Rodeos and Rubber Ducks

Today’s current water level: 76.1%
A couple of new additions are making their debut in The Current this week. From the Archives takes a look back at what was happening around Lake Travis decades ago - old headlines, forgotten stories, and the occasional reminder that some things around here never really change.
And then there’s The Good Find, a weekly spotlight on something clever, useful, or just plain interesting that feels like it belongs in the Lake Travis lifestyle. Not quite a product review, more like the kind of thing a neighbor might text you about after stumbling across it.
Both start this week. Let’s see what we dug up.

Last Week’s Poll Results. We asked how long you’ve lived around Lake Travis, and the answers revealed something special: about one-third of you have been here more than 20 years.
Many readers wrote in reminiscing of when 620 and 71 were still two-lane roads, when you could drive across the dam with hardly any traffic, and when a lake house didn’t require a small fortune. For some, the lake has been part of life since childhood - learning to ski as kids, spending weekends on the water, or growing up in places like Jonestown and Lago Vista before eventually finding their way back.
And of course, there are also newcomers just discovering what makes this corner of the Austin Hill Country so special.
🔴 🟡 🟢

This Month in 1972. This week’s find comes from the Lake Travis News of March 1972, part of the Rescuing Texas History collection preserved by the UNT Libraries and shared through The Portal to Texas History, with materials contributed by the City of Lakeway.
Back in March of 1972, more than 200 residents packed the Hudson Bend Fire Hall to debate septic tank regulations and water quality. Down the road, Double R-R Marine was celebrating a move to a larger showroom on Highway 290 to keep up with the growing boating crowd, while the Hudson Bend Lions Club gathered at La Hacienda Restaurant for civic talks. Dames at Sea was playing at the local dinner theatre, lakeview lots in Mountain View Estates were going for $4K, and a full year’s subscription of the newspaper cost $2.
Fifty-plus years later, the specifics have changed, but the character hasn’t.
🔴 🟡 🟢

This one belongs on your coffee table - and not just for show. Written by Hill Country native Carole McIntosh Sikes, it traces Hudson Bend’s story from Comanche territory and early Colorado River settlers all the way to the New Deal-era flooding that created the lake we love in 1937.
Consider it required reading for anyone who wants to understand why this place feels different. The coves, the hills, even the roads you drive every day - it all hits differently once you know the story behind it.

Fight for a View. In Lakeway, even an 18-inch height increase can stir the pot. A rebuilt home has revived the long-running question of whether the city’s view protection ordinance should stay exactly as it is, evolve with the times, or quietly retire.
The New Kid Has a Name. LTISD has officially named its second high school Highland Lakes High School. With construction underway and doors expected to open in August 2029, the $219 million campus will serve about 1,500 students - though families will have to wait until late 2027 to see how rezoning shakes out.
Adopt Me. Beethoven is a handsome 2-year-old Red Merle hound and generally living up to his name - best suited for an active home (bonus points if another dog is already on the roster).
🔴 🟡 🟢

Only 45 min south of Lakeway, Old Baldy Park poses its own challenge: 218 stone steps to the summit. The short but steep 0.2-mile climb in Wimberley rewards the effort with sweeping 360-degree Hill Country views, especially magical at sunrise and sunset.
