Bella Loma Tasting Room & Distillery feels less like a new business and more like a story that’s been aging for generations. Tucked off a quiet ribbon of road off Highway 71 in Spicewood, it’s the kind of place you’d drive past if you weren’t looking for it — a small white building that opens into one of the Hill Country’s newest gems.

Bella Loma was founded by husband-and-wife team Lalo and Brandy, whose vision traces back to Lalo’s childhood growing up on a ranch in Mexico — the same land now lined with rows of agave still cared for by his mother, Chucha. What began as a connection to family, land, and tradition became a distillery built around craftsmanship, culture, and gathering people together.

Even the branding carries meaning. The logo features Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god associated with the sun and hummingbirds. In Aztec belief, hummingbirds were fallen warriors reborn — small, resilient, and constantly in motion. That symbolism became part of Bella Loma’s philosophy: honoring the endurance, patience, and respect for nature that agave distillation demands.

What was once a landscaping company now houses an Aztec warrior, thoughtfully distilled spirits, and a tasting room that feels more like a friend’s beautifully designed Hill Country home than a commercial space. A massive mural watches over the room — a reflection of the heritage woven throughout the brand — while colorful Mexican artwork lines the walls, giving the space a personal feel.

Maria, the owners’ daughter, walked us through the property, the family story, and the long, patient process of creating a spirit worth pouring. Behind the bar, her husband Connor mixed cocktails as intentional as the space itself — polished, balanced, and quietly confident.

The standout was the Black Buda, custom made with a reposado aged in wine barrels from nearby Stone House Vineyard, giving it a faint rose hue and immediate depth. We also tried the spicy Pepino Margarita and their take on a Mexican Martini, both excellent in completely different ways. The whole experience feels distinctly local in the best possible way — Hill Country feel, family-run hospitality, small-batch spirits, and zero pretension.

This past June, we hosted our first-ever Lake Travis Current social event at Bella Loma — margaritas flowing, live music, and a crowd in no hurry to leave. It felt like the kind of afternoon this community needs more of. If you haven’t been, it’s absolutely worth a visit — one of those places that feels like you’ve discovered a local secret.
